Gelco Damper Repair: The Cambridge Owner’s Guide

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco dampers fall into two main series: the traditional cast-iron throat dampers (model prefixes LC and LCG, typically 30″, 32″, 36″, and 42″ widths) and the lighter stamped-steel top-mount dampers (TDC and TDCS series). The throat dampers are what we see most in Cambridge brick and masonry fireplaces; the top-mounts usually sit on prefab metal chimneys in newer construction around Alewife and the Fresh Pond edge.

To identify yours, look up the flue from the firebox with a flashlight. A Gelco throat damper has a cast-iron plate with a raised “GELCO” casting mark near the handle pivot, plus a stamped size code on the frame edge. The control handle is typically a 3/4″ square rod with a curved grip, mounted in the fireplace side wall. Top-mount dampers carry a metal tag on the cap frame with the full model number.

We source OEM Gelco parts through Haven’s buying network, but we’ve also found quality aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield and Famco that match the LC-series specs at lower cost. The catch: Gelco changed their pivot pin diameter from 5/16″ to 3/8″ around 1994, so a “universal” kit often isn’t. We measure before we order. Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle spins freely or falls out. The square rod has rounded off where it meets the pivot plate, or the plate itself has cracked at the set screw. This is the most common Gelco failure we see in Cambridge, usually after 15-20 years of seasonal cycling.
• The plate won’t seat fully closed. Warping from over-firing, or rust jacking along the frame rails, leaves a gap that pulls heated air up the flue 24/7. In January, that’s real money on your gas bill.
• You hear metal scraping or clanking when operating. The pivot pins have corroded enough to let the plate shift off-center. Left alone, it can jam fully open during a chimney fire or fully closed when you’re trying to vent smoke.
• Rust flakes or orange dust fall into the firebox. The steel control arm and pivot hardware are degrading faster than the cast iron plate. Cambridge’s wet winters accelerate this, especially where chimney caps are missing or undersized.
• The damper sticks in one position seasonally. Humidity swells creosote buildup on the plate edges, or the frame has shifted as the fireplace settle. We see this in the older triple-deckers near Inman Square where the masonry has been breathing for a century.

There’s exactly one thing a homeowner can safely check: whether the handle set screw has simply backed out. A 3/16″ hex key, a flashlight, and ten minutes of contortion will tell you. If that’s the fix, you don’t need us.

Everything else involves working inside the smoke chamber, often on a ladder, with rust-sharp metal above your head. The cast-iron plate weighs 15-30 pounds depending on width, and it’s balanced on corroded pins that can shear without warning. We’ve pulled plates out of fireboxes where the DIY attempt left the frame sprung and the throat opening compromised. That turns a $300 damper job into a $2,000 throat repair.
