Famco Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Damper Repair: The Cambridge Owner’s Guide

Famco damper repair in Cambridge typically runs $340-$580 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the plate, the frame, or the full assembly. We stock Famco-compatible damper hardware on every truck and can usually match your model same-day. Most Cambridge owners figure out something’s wrong when they feel a cold downdraft even with the fireplace “closed,” or when smoke pushes back into the room on the first fire of the season.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco dampers break down into two main lines you’ll find in Cambridge homes: the traditional throat dampers (cast-iron or steel plate, usually marked with a part number stamped into the frame edge) and the top-sealing dampers like the Famco EcoDamper series, which mount at the flue termination and use a stainless cable running down to the firebox.

For throat dampers, the critical match points are the frame width (measure the inside of the smoke chamber throat, typically 24″, 30″, or 36″ in local construction), the plate thickness (3/16″ vs. 1/4″ cast), and whether the original used a left-hand or right-hand pivot pin. We’ve seen owners order the right part number but wrong pivot orientation and end up with a plate that won’t seat. The EcoDamper and similar top-sealing units require matching the flue tile inner diameter exactly; a 13×13″ flue takes a different collar than a 12×16″.

We source Famco hardware through Haven’s buying network alongside DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco. When OEM Famco parts are back-ordered (common on older cast-iron throat plates), we use quality aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney that match the original spec. The camera doesn’t editorialize - it just shows you what’s there.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing
  • Cold air falls down the flue even when the damper is “shut.” The plate has warped or the frame has rusted at the seat, leaving a gap that lets outside air bypass. In Cambridge’s older housing stock near Porter Square and Harvard Square, we see this on dampers that have seen 40+ heating seasons.
  • The handle moves but the plate doesn’t pivot. The linkage pin has corroded through or the cotter pin has sheared. This is common on Famco throat dampers where the pivot hardware is mild steel and the firebox humidity cycles it through wet-dry seasons.
  • You see rust flakes or mortar debris in the firebox. The damper frame has separated from the smoke chamber walls, or the plate itself is spalling. Once the frame loosens, it shifts under its own weight and the plate can’t seat square.
  • Smoke rolls into the room on startup. The plate is stuck partially open, or the frame has sagged so the plate binds instead of sealing. This gets worse in Cambridge’s tight rowhouses where negative pressure from kitchen exhausts already competes with the flue.
  • The cable on a top-sealing Famco won’t retract fully. The EcoDamper cable has frayed at the termination, or the spring-tension mechanism has fatigued. We’ve replaced cables that looked intact from below but were down to three strands where they bend over the pulley.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Typical Range What Drives It
Famco throat damper plate only $340-$420 Plate size, pivot hardware condition, smoke chamber access
Famco throat damper full assembly (frame + plate) $480-$580 Frame removal, smoke chamber repointing, refractory repair
Famco EcoDamper / top-sealing replacement $420-$560 Flue collar size, cable length, cap condition

Every Famco damper repair in Cambridge includes the NFPA 211 Level 2 camera inspection (Haven Standard Clause 4), written scope, written price, and written warranty before work starts. Materials come through our Haven buying network; we don’t mark up parts separately. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation. If your frame is embedded in deteriorated smoke chamber mortar, we’ll show you the camera footage and quote any masonry work separately - never bundled or assumed.

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: open the damper fully, shine a flashlight up, and look for obvious rust holes, a cracked plate, or a handle that’s no longer connected to anything. If you have a top-sealing Famco, binoculars from the ground can sometimes show a cable dangling or a cap sitting crooked.

What you shouldn’t do: throat dampers sit in a high-tension frame, and the smoke chamber walls above them are often unsupported masonry. We’ve seen homeowners pry at a stuck plate and dislodge the frame into the flue, or worse, compromise the smoke chamber structure. The spring mechanism on EcoDamper units is under load; releasing it without the right tools can snap cable or hardware. If the plate is accessible and the pin is intact, a homeowner can sometimes free a stuck plate with penetrating oil - but if the frame is loose or the plate is warped, it’s a trained-technician job. Corrine Halstead and our crews carry the right pivot pins, frame anchors, and refractory patch materials on every truck.
