DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Cambridge Owner’s Guide

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex makes two crown configurations for residential liners, and mixing them up is the most common ordering mistake we see. The DuraFlex 316Ti series uses a cast-aluminum crown with a 13-inch base flange and a 2-inch overhang designed for 6- to 8-inch round liners. The DuraFlex 304 series, which we find more often in Cambridge’s 1910-1940 triple-deckers and the smaller condo conversions near Central Square, uses a lighter stamped-steel crown with a 10.5-inch base and a 1.5-inch drip edge. Both mount with four stainless bolts through the crown base into the chimney top, but the bolt pattern differs: 316Ti uses a 9.5-inch square pattern, 304 uses an 8-inch pattern.

To identify yours, look for the DuraFlex stamp on the crown’s vertical face or the model tag on the liner itself, usually visible from the firebox with a flashlight. If the tag is gone, measure bolt-center to bolt-center across the diagonal. Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

• Water dripping into the firebox after rain. The crown’s sealant bed has cracked or the crown itself has separated from the flue tile, letting water run down the liner instead of shedding to the roof. In Cambridge, this accelerates after freeze-thaw cycles in January and February.
• White efflorescence staining the exterior brick below the chimney top. Water is getting past the crown, dissolving salts in the mortar, and pushing them out as it dries. The crown’s drip edge may be too short or the sealant has pulled away from the flue.
• Rust streaks down the chimney face from the crown line. On DuraFlex 304 systems, this means the stamped-steel crown has corroded through at the bolt holes or the weld seam. Salt air from the coast and road salt mist in winter shorten the 304’s typical 12-15 year lifespan to 8-10 years in Greater Boston.
• The crown sits crooked or wobbles when touched. One or more mounting bolts have backed out or the crown base has cracked around a bolt hole, usually from thermal expansion stress or an installer who overtightened during the original liner pull.
• Birds or squirrels nesting at the chimney top. A missing or damaged crown leaves the flue exposed. DuraFlex crowns include a built-in mesh spark arrestor; if that’s torn or missing, animals get in and the crown needs replacement, not just resealing.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check three things from the ground or with a ladder to the gutter line: whether the crown looks level, whether you see rust streaks, and whether the mesh screen is intact. Use binoculars. Do not climb onto the roof. Cambridge’s older homes often have 10/12 or steeper pitches, and the freeze-thaw cycle makes shingles brittle from November through March.

What goes wrong with DIY crown work: the sealant needs to be rated for 600°F minimum, ordinary silicone melts and the leak returns in weeks. The bolts must be torqued to spec; too loose and the crown lifts in wind, too tight and the base cracks.
