Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield has produced several damper lines over the years, and the part you need depends on when it was installed and whether it’s a top-mount or throat damper.

The Copperfield Vestal line, common in 1980s and 1990s rebuilds, uses a cast-iron plate with a 5/16-inch pivot pin. The critical compatibility gotcha: Vestal plates and frames are not interchangeable with the later Copperfield Lyemance or Lock-Top series, which use a 3/8-inch pin and a wider bearing surface. We’ve found mismatched pins in Cambridge homes where a previous owner swapped parts from different eras, and the result is a damper that binds or hangs crooked.

To identify yours: look for a stamped model number on the frame’s left side (facing the firebox), or measure the plate thickness. Vestal plates run 3/16 inch; Lyemance and Lock-Top run 1/4 inch. If the frame is rusted through at the pivot points, we typically recommend a quality aftermarket equivalent from our Haven buying network, sourced through Famco or Gelco, which matches OEM specs at a lower parts cost. Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle moves but the plate doesn’t. The linkage between the handle assembly and the plate has corroded or the cotter pin has sheared. This is the most common failure we see in Cambridge’s older housing stock, where decades of acidic flue gases have eaten the steel rod.
• The plate is stuck open or closed. Rust welding is the usual cause, especially if the chimney has no cap or the crown is cracked. Once the plate seizes to the frame, forcing it risks bending the plate or snapping the pivot pin.
• You feel a cold draft even when the damper is “closed.” The plate has warped or the frame has rusted unevenly, leaving a gap. In Cambridge’s January cold snaps, that gap can pull 200-400 CFM of heated air up the flue 24 hours a day.
• The plate drops open on its own after closing. The tension spring in the handle assembly has weakened, or the pivot bracket has wallowed out. On Copperfield throat dampers, the spring is under significant tension and can snap if adjusted incorrectly.
• Visible rust flakes or spalling on the plate surface. This indicates advanced corrosion. The plate is thinning, and in extreme cases we’ve seen plates crack through the center, dropping debris into the firebox.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: with the firebox cold and empty, shine a flashlight up the flue and look for the plate position. If it’s clearly open or closed and the handle won’t move it, you’ve confirmed the failure point. Do not force the handle. Copperfield damper plates and frames are cast iron; they crack before they bend, and a cracked plate dropping into a lit fire is a real hazard.

What goes wrong with DIY: the pivot pin on older Vestal units is often rust-welded into the frame bracket. Extracting it requires driving it out with a drift punch while supporting the frame, a two-person job in tight quarters. The spring tension on the handle assembly is high enough to cause hand or face injury if released unexpectedly. We’ve also found homeowners install the plate backwards, creating a gap that looks closed but leaks continuously.
