The EcoDamper and similar top-sealing units require matching the flue tile inner diameter exactly; a 13×13″ flue takes a different collar than a 12×16″.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

• Cold air falls down the flue even when the damper is “shut.” The plate has warped or the frame has rusted at the seat, leaving a gap that lets outside air bypass. In Cambridge’s older housing stock near Porter Square and Harvard Square, we see this on dampers that have seen 40+ heating seasons.
• The handle moves but the plate doesn’t pivot. The linkage pin has corroded through or the cotter pin has sheared. This is common on Famco throat dampers where the pivot hardware is mild steel and the firebox humidity cycles it through wet-dry seasons.

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: open the damper fully, shine a flashlight up, and look for obvious rust holes, a cracked plate, or a handle that’s no longer connected to anything. If you have a top-sealing Famco, binoculars from the ground can sometimes show a cable dangling or a cap sitting crooked.

What you shouldn’t do: throat dampers sit in a high-tension frame, and the smoke chamber walls above them are often unsupported masonry. We’ve seen homeowners pry at a stuck plate and dislodge the frame into the flue, or worse, compromise the smoke chamber structure.
