HeatShield Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Crown Repair: The Cambridge Owner’s Guide

HeatShield crown repair in Cambridge typically runs $380-$620 installed for most residential flues, and we stock the refractory mortar and application tools for same-day completion on standard sizes. The repair restores the concrete crown that seals your flue tiles from water intrusion, and when it’s failing you’ll usually spot it from the ground: hairline cracks widening after freeze-thaw cycles, or water pooling where the crown meets the top course of brick.

Cambridge owners tend to notice the problem in late March, when snowmelt finds its way through crown cracks and stains the firebox ceiling. By November, those same cracks have widened enough to let combustion gases leak into the attic space. Corrine Halstead and our crews have applied HeatShield crown repairs from Inman Square triple-deckers to the pre-war brick rows along Broadway, and the pattern is consistent - crowns fail from the top down, and the damage accelerates once water reaches the rebar.

We carry HeatShield Cerfractory Foam, bonding agents, and trowel-grade mix rated to 2,900°F on every service truck. If your crown is structurally intact but cracked or spalled, we can resurface it without a full rebuild. If the crown has separated from the flue tiles or the concrete is crumbling, we’ll document it with the camera, show you the footage, and quote the repair in writing before we open a single bag of mix.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield doesn’t sell “crown repair” as a discrete SKU - it’s a system application using their Cerfractory Foam resurfacing product and compatible bonding agents. What matters for your chimney is the crown’s dimensions and condition, not a model number lookup.

Here’s how we identify what you need on a Cambridge roof:

  • Measure the crown footprint: Most residential crowns in Cambridge run 24″-36″ square for a single flue, or 36″-48″ for a double-flue setup common in the 1920s duplexes near Porter Square. HeatShield resurfacing covers up to 2″ of material loss; beyond that, we pour a new crown.
  • Check the flue tile reveal: The crown must overhang the flue tile by minimum 3/4″ on all sides. If the tile is flush or proud of the crown edge, water runs straight down the flue - a condition we see constantly on the flat-roofed additions off Mass. Ave. where original builders cheated the overhang.
  • OEM vs. field-mixed: HeatShield’s factory-blended Cerfractory Foam is pre-colored to match weathered concrete and includes the proprietary bonding agent. Field-mixed Portland-based crowns cost less upfront but crack again in 3-5 years versus 10-15 for a proper HeatShield application. We source through Haven’s buying network to keep the OEM material honest-priced; the difference is usually $80-$140 on a standard crown.

Level Two Chimney Cambridge is an independent service provider - not affiliated with HeatShield - and we also stock DuraFlex liner components and Gelco cap hardware for systems that need more than crown work.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
  • Hairline cracks running crown-to-edge. These open in winter when trapped moisture freezes in the concrete matrix. In Cambridge’s freeze-thaw cycle - typically 80+ cycles per season - a 1/32″ crack becomes 1/8″ by spring. Water follows the crack to the brick below, where it destroys mortar joints from the inside out.
  • Spalling or flaking on the crown surface. The top layer of concrete pops off in thin plates, exposing the aggregate beneath. This happens when the original crown was poured with too much water in the mix, or when de-icing salts migrate up from saturated brick. The crown loses its slope and puddles form.
  • Water in the firebox after rain, no visible flashing issue. If your chimney cap is intact and the flashing looks sound from the attic, the crown is the likely entry point. We verify this with a water test - simulated rainfall from a garden sprayer while the camera watches the flue interior - before we quote anything.
  • Crown separated from the top course of brick. A visible gap where the crown meets the chimney body means the bond has failed completely. This gap pulls warm room air into the chase in winter, accelerating condensation damage to the flue liner. We’ve measured gaps up to 3/8″ on unlined chimneys in the Agassiz neighborhood.
  • Efflorescence blooming on exterior brick below the crown. The white powder is dissolved salts left behind when water evaporates. It means water is moving through the masonry system, and the crown is the most common entry point on chimneys over 15 years old in this climate.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Price Range What’s Included
HeatShield crown resurfacing (single flue, cracks <1/4″) $380-$480 Surface prep, Cerfractory Foam application, bonding agent, slope restoration, photo documentation
HeatShield crown resurfacing (double flue or extensive spalling) $480-$620 Additional material, extended surface area, reinforced edge detailing
Full crown pour (crown structurally failed or missing) $720-$1,100 Forming, rebar if needed, concrete pour, cure time, HeatShield topcoat option

The range depends on three things: how much of the crown surface needs coverage, whether we can work from the roof or need staging (steep pitches on the Victorian-era homes near Harvard Square add labor time), and whether the flue tiles need resetting first. We quote every factor separately in writing - Clause 1 of the Haven Standard requires it - so you see exactly what drives the number.

Every HeatShield crown repair includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the resurfacing cracks, separates, or fails to shed water, we return and make it right at no charge. The camera doesn’t editorialize - it just shows you what’s there - and we archive those photos under Haven Standard Clause 4 so there’s no dispute about condition before and after.

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: from the ground with binoculars, look for cracks, missing chunks, or pooling water on the crown surface. If you have safe roof access and a stable ladder, measure the crown footprint and note any gaps between crown and brick. That’s the limit of useful DIY.

What goes wrong when owners try this themselves: HeatShield’s Cerfractory Foam requires a mechanically clean, dry surface and specific ambient temperature at application (45°F-90°F, no rain within 24 hours). Cambridge’s shoulder seasons blow through that window fast. Worse, working at roof edge on a chimney stack - typically 8″-12″ wide - is genuinely dangerous without fall protection and experience on pitched surfaces. The material itself is not the challenge; the application conditions and the height are.

We carry full HeatShield inventory on every truck, and most crown repairs in Cambridge finish in 2-3 hours. Call (857) 309-1908 for a written estimate - we’ll scope it with the camera first, name the price before we start, and show you the documentation when we’re done.
