HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Service Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Cambridge’s triple-decker and rowhouse stock presents a specific challenge for HeatShield applications. Most chimneys in this city were built between 1880 and 1930 with unlined or clay-tile flues sized for coal, later converted to oil, and now serving gas appliances in condo-split buildings. That layered history means a HeatShield coating that works in a suburban ranch chimney can fail here if the technician doesn’t account for what came before. We’ve restored hundreds of HeatShield linings in Cambridge since 2009, and we’ve learned to read the flue’s full history before we open a single bucket of Cerfractory.

We are an independent HeatShield service provider - not authorized, affiliated with, or endorsed by HeatShield. Our only obligation is to the homeowner’s flue integrity, not to moving product.

Why Trust Level Two Chimney Cambridge for Your HeatShield Chimney Cleaning?

Corrine Halstead learned the trade at CUNY Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn before she decided chimneys were the one building system nobody examined until something went wrong. She’s spent the better part of two decades running crews through Greater Boston, and Level Two has put cameras up flues in everything from triple-deckers near Inman Square to century-old rowhouses a block off the Charles. The camera doesn’t editorialize - it just shows you what’s there. That principle became Clause 4 of the Haven Standard in 2009, and it governs every HeatShield evaluation we perform.

Our technicians carry genuine HeatShield Cerfractory and Vacu-Flue materials sourced through Haven’s buying network. We don’t substitute off-brand refractory sealants; they fail at temperature and won’t survive our Chimney Cleaning & Sweep services. When we open a cleanout in Cambridgeport or Mid-Cambridge, we know what we’re looking at: three terracotta flues in one stack, a partial Metalbestos liner terminating mid-shaft, an unlined gas flue - and we know which HeatShield product, if any, belongs in that configuration under Massachusetts 527 CMR.

Every HeatShield job starts with an NFPA 211 Level 2 inspection, includes a documented photo record, and carries a written warranty backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. Clause 1 of the Haven Standard requires a written price and written scope before any work begins. No exceptions.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Cambridge

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Cambridge
  • Delaminated Cerfractory from improper surface prep. First-generation Cerfractory applied by a prior sweep without proper flue cleaning will flake off after a few heating seasons. We see this constantly in Cambridge’s pre-war chimneys where a contractor rushed the prep to beat a closing deadline. The sealant needs a clean, abraded tile surface to bond. We remove the failed coating with Vacu-Flue, sweep to bare terracotta, and reapply properly.
  • Shrinkage cracking at tile joints and crown transitions. HeatShield Cerfractory run too thin can’t bridge the thermal movement between flue tiles. Cambridge’s freeze-thaw cycling - riverside humidity plus nor’easter exposure - accelerates this failure. We apply at the specified thickness and address crown integrity with Crown Coat before the Cerfractory goes in.
  • Spalled glazed flue tiles with poor Cerfractory adhesion. Soot-glazed tiles that weren’t abraded or primed before application won’t hold sealant. In a Mid-Cambridge call last winter, our tech found a Cerfractory coating spalling off in sheets over a glazed flue. We stripped it with Vacu-Flue, abraded the surface, and started over. Two heating seasons later, it’s holding.
  • Sagging resurfacing slurry above heat-damaged damper frames. HeatShield’s resurfacing system can pool and harden into a rough ledge that catches creosote and restricts draft. This happens when the damper frame is warped or the slurry wasn’t worked properly during application. We inspect the damper assembly during our Level 2 scan and repair or replace it before resurfacing.
  • Failed applications in chimneys that needed relining, not resurfacing. This is the big one. If flue tile is cracked through the wall or the chimney has lost its required clearance to combustibles, no amount of Cerfractory will fix it. We say so plainly and pivot to a listed stainless liner from DuraFlex or Olympia Chimney. There is no honest way to resurface a chimney that needs relining.

HeatShield Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

We apply genuine HeatShield Cerfractory and Vacu-Flue materials purchased through authorized distributors. Off-brand refractory sealants fail at temperature and will not survive a proper chimney sweep. We won’t use them.

Our repair-vs-replace decision is straightforward. If the flue tile is intact, the clearance to combustibles meets code, and the chimney structure is sound, we resurface with HeatShield. If the tile is cracked through, the clearance is compromised, or the stack has suffered structural damage from Cambridge’s aggressive freeze-thaw cycling, we recommend a listed stainless liner instead. We show you the camera footage and explain both options with a written price for each before you decide. Free Second Opinion on any competitor’s written estimate - bring it in.

Our HeatShield Service Process - Step by Step

Our HeatShield Service Process - Step by Step
  1. 1
Diagnosis - NFPA 211 Level 2 Inspection. We run a camera the full length of the flue, document every tile joint, crack, and glaze deposit, and record the footage. Clause 4 of the Haven Standard requires this photo record on every job. You’ll see what we see before we quote a dollar.
  2. 2
Repair or Install - HeatShield Application. Based on the scan, we either prep and apply Cerfractory sealant, perform Vacu-Flue crack repair, or install the cast-in-place resurfacing system. We stock genuine HeatShield materials for same-visit completion on most Cambridge calls.
  3. 3
Test - Smoke and Draft Verification. After application, we verify proper draft and perform a smoke test to confirm the flue is drawing correctly. No guesswork. The numbers either pass or they don’t.
  4. 4
Warranty - Written Documentation. You receive a written scope of work, the photo record, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not done right, we make it right.

HeatShield Products We Service & Install in Cambridge

We work with the full HeatShield product line: Cerfractory Flue Sealant for resurfacing intact clay tile; the Resurfacing System with Foam Insulation for insulated flue liner applications; Vacu-Flue for vacuum-assisted crack and spall repair; and Cast-in-Place Insulated Flue Liner for full structural relining. We stock Cerfractory and Vacu-Flue materials locally for fast turnaround on Newton Heatshield service and Cambridge calls.

We also source compatible materials from DuraFlex, Gelco, Olympia Chimney, Famco, and Copperfield through Haven’s buying network. That multi-brand capability matters when a Cambridge triple-decker’s shared stack requires a solution HeatShield wasn’t designed for.
